In the 60’s, there was a Lion’s Club in the panhandle of Texas that would put on a pheasant hunt every year in December.
The club members would take hunters around to area farms and show them where the birds were and the rest was up to hunters.

One year we had a large number of people who brought dogs to hunt with. I just happened to get four men with a “sure enough good bird dog".  Well, that’s what the guy said that owned to dog.

The first place we went was the Charles Frye farm. I had seen lots of pheasants and it would be a good place to test this “good dog”.

I placed two men on the west side of the field to be the Blockers and took the other two and this “good dog” around to the east side, to let them hunt:  east to west.

Those two ole boys got out of their big Ford Bronco and opened the back gate to let the dog out of his cage.  The dog was on a long line while those boys put their gear on and loaded their shotguns. When everyone was ready, Floyd took that long line off the “good dog” and the hunt was on.

Those hunters probably saw twenty pheasants, but the hunters never got within shooting range.  That black “good dog” came off of that line looking for a place to hunt and for the next hour all that any of us heard was ole Floyd shouting, “Come Back Blacky!”

Blacky covered every inch of that corn field, jumping up one bird after another and chasing it until he would jump up another bird and off he would go again chasing that pheasant.  I am sure that Blacky knew the sound of Floyd’s voice; Floyd would whistle or holler and Blacky would stop momentarily, and then off he would go; He just wasn’t listening. Blacky was to busy running here and there, having his own way. He was just too busy to hear and respond to Floyd.

Many Christians are not hearing God’s voice, because they are busy with activities and some of those activities are good and God honoring, but not what God wanted them to do.

Blacky hasn’t reached the point of obedience because he needed more training in discerning his master’s voice. 

What was really happening to this ‘Good Dog?’

There were other voices whispering in Blacky’s ears as well;   the voice of his own desire, “Blacky you are a dog, run and enjoy this time of freedom while you have the chance."  So, that is what Blacky did.

But Blacky was trained to hunt and obey.

Christians let me remind you, sometimes our flesh can scream pretty loud, especially when we want something very badly or we are under some pressure.  The Bible says God will speak and tell us to go to the right or the left. Isaiah 30:21

None of those hunters ever got one bird. And as far as I know, ole Floyd is still out there in Easter, Texas hollering, “Come Back Blacky!”

Sometimes we just don’t listen!
